Candidate Resume

This job seeker is looking for feedback on his resume. The team at 1millionresume.com has reviewed it and we are posting our feedback as an example or case study for you๐Ÿ‘‡

Sensitive Information is hidden to protect user’s privacy.

Formatting / Spacing and ATS

โœ”๏ธ Current resume format is simple and everything looks aligned.

โœ”๏ธ It is a common resume template but clean and the font size is big enough to read clearly – this is good.

โœ”๏ธThis is a single-column resume template which means this is ATS-friendly. ATS-friendly resumes are easily read by recruitment software and algorithms. I will give you positive points for that.

๐Ÿ›‘The only formatting mistake that I observed came in version 2 of this resume when you added ‘Personal Interest’ in a different font. You should always use the same font consistently throughout your resume.

Section by Section Review

We will go section by section and discuss feedback and recommendations.

Work Experience

  • I see you started your career as a Contract Software Engineer in 2015 and this went on for about 3 years till 2018.
  • Since you have not mentioned the start year of your Education, your resume chronology is not very clear. What I mean here is – If I only look at your work Experience, it shows a gap from 2018 to 2021 until I look at the Education. In your Education, add starting year as well.
  • After college, you have started your career as an Intern and moved through contract to permanent positions. This has led to you working with “Fidelity Investments” company. This is a great career trajectory with a variety of experiences.
  • You have written 3-4 bullet points under each experience, which is the right number of points.
  • You have quantified your bullet points and made them result-oriented. This is how it should be. For example – Set up baseline performance monitors and a sophisticated tagging system, enhancing the precision of operational oversight for over 360 critical services and directly contributing to a 31% improvement in incident detection accuracy

Should you mention L3 Software Engineer or L4 Software Engineer as a Role?

No. Because of 2 big reasons

  1. L3 / L4 terms are very specific and are not understood well across the industry. You may not want to risk future interview chances because of this.
  2. Recruiters are searching for candidates on LinkedIn or Indeed. They do apply filters on current or previous Job Roles. They will search for “Software Engineer” and not “L3 Software Engineer”

So you should use the role names which are well known and used across.

Skills Section

You have mentioned category-wise skills and didn’t go over with the numbers of skills.

At 1millionresume.com – we have seen professionals mentioning 30-35 skills, kind of everything they have worked with. We recommend those professionals to only mention their key skills under this section.

๐Ÿ“Œ You should move Skills section before Work Experience. These days, hiring is based on skills so the recruiter will first ensure you have the skills they are looking for.

๐Ÿ“Œ General practice in resume/cv is to mention spoken languages separately under “Languages” section. See example below ๐Ÿ‘‡

Education

Remove GPA/grades from Education. Writing grades in a resume is more suited for Freshers in case they have average or above-average grades.

As I said above – you should mention the starting date of your Bachelor of Science program. Otherwise, you have all the required details under Education section.

Should you mention Awards/Honours under Education?

Yes in this case you can.

Since your awards are related to academic degree only, it is a good idea to mention those under Education section. You get positive points for this.

Candidate created 2nd version before our feedback ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ›‘ I see you have added “Personal Interest” in a later version but it uses a different font. Use the same font across resume. This font should be simple/common because your resume will be parsed by a program first and complex fonts create problems when software reads it.

At 1millionresume.com, we witnessed it firsthand when our user imported resume with a special Mac font. With his old resume, the same problem would be happening on job portals.

๐Ÿ›‘Is “Personal Interest” section written correctly?

No. There should not be the word “I” in your resume.

At 1millionresume.com’s AI Resume Builder – You can write the same content under Interests section in a comma-separated manner like – “Spinning house music as DJ, Sparring in MMA/Boxing and Embracing the challenge of Brazilian Jui Jitsu as Blue Belt

So far we have provided feedback on everything he has written on his resume. But Is that enough to Stand out in thousands of applicants? Probably not.

Since he is an experienced professional, his resume can go up to 2 pages without any questions.

In this later part, we will talk about what important sections he missed and How his resume can stand out?

Achievements and Awards

  • You can write your academic or work-related achievements under this section.
